High speed tiny particles hitting at an angle almost parallel would not rip open the craft exterior skin but bounce off with an impact sound like a thud against metal so I'm guessing mass just above dust size would make that sound.

I doubt that it was a regular 1-2 knock like they portray it. It was probably random single knocks which would be easier to explain by natural causes.
