I would have been more inclined to look at the data and say that some non-human primates communicate on a level similar to fungi, with "intellects" (for lack of a better word) akin to spores, molds, and funguses.
Seeing as they appear to be perfectly content to exist in an environment of total darkness, fed on a steady daily diet of pure, undiluted horseshit.
So I'm not surprised that they were found to possess some rudimentary form of communication. Hell, some of them even become ambulatory.
