Are there any examples of bottle nose dolphins swimming/living in fresh water? Is it even possible? I feel like these questions weren't even thought of when this scheme was devised.

Yes, in the Amazon and I think there were some in China which are probably extinct now. But the plan was to take bottle nose dolphins (ocean dwellers) and plunk them into Loch Ness.
