Hey Everyone,
A few days ago I wrote about how a 2 1/2 lb jar of peanut butter I had jammed into the fork of a tree was taken by something unknown. A couple of days later I went back with another jar of peanut butter, but this time I put it where I could keep an eye on it. I did some tree knocks and got no reply. Of course, the peanut butter was not taken. I just don't think whatever took the peanut butter before will take another one if I am in sight. I don't know what took it. Other than some unidentified vocalizations (howls) and some musky odors (and missing peanut butter) I have no proof that there is some unknown (to me) creature living in these woods. I have yet to find any tracks or scat. I spent a lot of time in these woods as a child, but it was much different then. The woods were broken by a large hay meadow as well as pastures. It is all woods now, except for a pipeline and power line right-of-way that is kept clear. Also, there were no deer or feral hogs there when I was growing up, potential food for a large predator. I came to a low-tech solution to my peanut butter problem. I bought some "jingle bells" and have a roll of strong cord to tie to the jar next time. I'm going to attach the cord to the jar and run the string to the place I will be sitting, out of sight, with the bells attached to the string on my end. Wish me luck!
