After Admiral Byrd came back form the south pole, all the world's superpowers decided to start testing nukes straight up. It looked like it was hitting something, hence the mushroom cloud shape. In America, it was called Project Fishbowl. No joke. It was part of Operation Domini... latin for "of the Lord."
