Venus and Mars were probably both Earth like that went wrong at some point. I have read a few articles on Venus might be made re-habitable using nuclear explosion hitting the planet at an angle to speed up the rotation and dumping unlimited amounts of sodium and other stuff to react with the atmosphere.
