When you throw an object out of your window while driving down the highway the object has forward momentum but slows down as soon as it's decoupled. Same principle here. Once decoupled the man is moving much slower than the shuttle. There would be no way to catch back up without considerable forward momentum. I think it's you who does not understand the physics or the concept. Try again, except this time use logic.
