It's amazing that it's lasted this long, really. This was not a heavy-duty mockup but rather an actual Saturn IB, made of light-weight, high-tech materials designed only to survive brief storage and a single launch. It's a shame it did not go to a museum years ago for preservation.

That decline was committed to thanks to Democrats Walter Mondale and William Proxmire. We'd be on Mars had Proxmire's legislation not gutted and dismantled NASA (even requiring the manufacturing tools and jigs be destroyed).
