Since white dwarves don't undergo nuclear fusion, their output is relatively stable and their compact shape makes it easier to capture the energy as they require way fewer satellites to do so.

Of course, the captured energy once put to use is always turned into heat. A difference in temperature can be used to generate more energy, hence the idea of a matrioshka brain. The outer layers can blueshift the radiation so much that it blends into the microwave background radiation. Perhaps the anisotropy of microwave background radiation has nothing to do with the big bang but is instead evidence of alien matrioshka brains.

Another idea is for dyson spheres around carbon white dwarves. If you dump hydrogen into them it will undergo fusion, and maybe even up to carbon. So a white dwarf can be turned into a controlled source of fusion by dumping hydrogen into it.
