I have one issue with the updated statements by Atlas Obscura. The universe was not created in a "bang". There was no space, only a single dimension that contained the entire universe's energy. When space expanded, the universe moved into three dimensions. Nothing actually moved however. Space growing, like a new life form, made everything seem to move. It wasn't until matter condensed on the standing waves created by the expansion of space that gravity allowed matter to move on its own and form galaxies and incredibly large and long structures that connect the galaxies. All this time everything was moving away from everything else, until we have .

Good point ... but as with science in general, it is always changing perspectives. Not directed at you, so don't take this wrong, but I always get a kick out of those who argue that something is 'settled science'. There is no such thing. We are fairly certain about much ... but much of what was once 'settled science' has been proven wrong over the years. Nothing in science is an absolute, at least that's my opinion.
