A toothpick can harmlessly remove the build up from the ribbon that fills the hollows in letters like P or A. The hammers will hit the ribbon more firmly and make sharper letters. (I'm so old I wrote my research results on a manual typewriter.)

Vintage tech is a lot of fun! (Clarifying: A toothpick can harmlessly remove the build up from the typeface on the hammers that fills the hollows in letters like P or A. The ribbon sheds tiny fibers which, mixed with ink, form a paste.)
