One of the most prominent figures in the women's suffrage movement was Susan B. Anthony, who was clearly a dyke. She advocated separation of women from men, having all the same ability to earn a living and affect changes in the law and social norms through the ballot box as any man.

If she wanted to live her life as a lesbian, the only way to do that was to live independently. She dressed up her movement as a women's rights movement but really it fits more if she's trying to gain the right of lesbians to live the alternate lifestyle.
