I thought the large muscle groups are "switched off" during sleep so you don't thrash around during a dream. As has been explained to me, sleep paralysis is what you experience when you're still kinda conscious but you're muscles are already deactivated. That happens only in the grey zone between wakefulness and sleep proper, AFAIK.
