I think it's further than just marketing buzz. If they can make the version number upgrade so fast that you can't follow it, than it's meaningless. Meaningless version numbers are an easy way to get everyone on the "always stay updated" rolling release model, and if you're software's rolling release, then you can excuse the testing department (ala Microsoft) because if there's a bug, no problem, it'll be fixed for everyone on Tuesday.
