It seems like it would be extremely simple to set up a compact airbag system on a ship that would essentially make it impossible to sink even with a massive hull breach. It seems like this could be done easily on small boats to large ships and everything in between. Any ideas why something like this isn't being used? I would have a hard time believing I'm the first person to think of this. They even use large inflatable air bags to raise sunken ships.

Because of the space needed and weight of the bags + a massive high powered compression system, There wouldnt be much room left inside the ship, You ever seem the size and weight of a circus tent folded up?. Also if the ship had a tear in its hull theres always the possibility the damaged hull could tear the inflatables bags. The military experimented with ice and sawdust mixture to repair and even build ships with, The mixture is stronger than concrete, Quite a few videos on it over at youtube if it perks your interest.
