Until they find more food or victims. Then it is a few more miles. A radius of 50 miles likely will be stripped bare. Up to 100 miles would be damn unusable.

He trick is to have a small sacrificial pantry while preserving the bulk of canned foods etc in a well hidden location.

With livestock and seedstock gone and anything that looks remotely edible being picked over every month as a new wave of refugees sweep through you are just waiting for the inevitable at that rate. You would really need a community of several hundred with extensive archery and polearm units and round the clock patrols, mercilessly slaughtering or enslaving people who wander by. And forward scouts with some real Scooby Doo monster type setups to scare away randoms.
Such a community cannot form until the end comes. As in the government loses control over its armies. Otherwise they would Waco our arse.
Timing will be everything. Till then bond with neighbors and learn tangible skills. And be prepared to walk away from everything.
