Because everyone in the countryside is reliant on electricity too. Electric well pumps, refrigerated/frozen food supplies, electrical controls for HVAC. Only ~1% of the nation is involved in farming, and all of that requires electricity too, from the electric systems in tractors to the pumping and control systems for milking parlors.

Still. A lot of communities would have the wherewithal to manage, farms or not. I certainly would be able to and a lot in my community are red-pilled as well. The time of year would certainly make a difference though.

Fukushima

That's the real kicker in a scenario like this. Most nuke plants, while the reactor is contained, the spent fuel pools are not and require a constant feed of cool water. No power, no pumps. Those rods will catch fire and devastate large portions of the globe.

Even if you live off grid and have adequate farmland you're fucked when the radioactive wind blows in.
