There is settled science - things nobody in their right mind is questioning. Does that mean it's true? Not necessarily, but we have no reason to doubt it, with the current facts. Cult / religious belief is different. That is belief in spite of the absence of supporting facts. With settled science - we have a plethora of supporting facts, that's why nobody is questioning it. Should new data show up, then it needs to be reevaluated.
That said, you probably mean global warming, and I'm probably with you, in that case. But the number of electrons in the valent level of oxygen is quite settled, and shouldn't be brought into question unless one has some astonishing breakthrough to show.
