I see this as a larger view on the problem that is being seen of children through college being taught that knowledge comes from elsewhere and they must see what authorities think before they can think about it. School used to be a place that taught base knowledge and then prepared the mind to be able to think and question and resolve their own answers. So much research is done by tiny hyper focused incremental verification papers and studies (and they get funding based on that) versus pure research that is become very rare. Pure research is self or group stretching out their understanding of things, looking for unseen things. By its nature not peer reviewed, My favorite story on this was the PARC, pall alto research center. They literally forgot about these guys, kept paying them, let them go rogue and that’s literally the giant leapfrog that created the entire computer and information technology economy we have now. Unbridled, pure research. Perhaps the most lucrative research project ever in the history of man. The course of mankind has been improved and changed by enlightened and gifted individuals countless times doing research on their own, usually against the existing paradigm of thinking. My .02
