Acid rain did exist in localized areas near extremely polluted cities in the us. When rain passed through active (SO2)smog it would become slightly more acidic then usual. Rain water is naturally slightly acidic. It was bad for plants in those areas and harmless to people. The auto industry claimed it caused issues with paint, but that was actually the new water based paint being poor quality.
