This might not be popular here, but there aren't any good guys in this scenario. Both Russia and Ukraine are corrupt beyond anything I can comprehend. I'm almost certain this whole thing is happening to get foreign money in to launder out to the leaders of both countries. Neither give a warm shit about their citizens and everyone knows it. Russia is probably getting plenty of the equipment to see if any technology is useful as well.
