Germany attacked from the west, and Russia from the east in an agreement to carve up the country between them. Liberation?
The soviets gave them their borders and status within the Warsaw pact countries.
I steal your wallet containing $1000 and split it with accomplice thief who helped attack you two to one. Accomplice thief then tries to steal my half of your wallet cash and I attack accomplice and take all of the money that was originally in the wallet. I keep your credit card and use it at will and steal other stuff from your house and neighbors whenever I want to as neighborhood 'protection' insurance from the accomplice thief. I point out how nice I was to give you back half the cash that the accomplice thief stole from your wallet. I keep the half of case I stole. Sounds fair? Not.
In your analogy, the guy gave back half the cash and let you live in your house. He could have dismembered you completely but took mercy on you. Recall, there is no police or other civil services. He also prevented anyone else from harming you. Then after some time he let you go on your own and stand on your two feet.
