There's a difference between "volunteering" and "being volunteered" and I suspect that quite a few front line soldiers are gulag prisoners offered freedom if they survive being bullet-magnets so that the real soldiers coming in behind them can deal with the Ukrainian defenders firing at the poorly equipped volunteers.
