If I'm reading this right, it means that farmers can plant seeds taken from their own crops, and get the same yields in successive years. Usually hybred seeds have to be bought from the manufacturer, and are good for only one year. The seeds they produce don't yield as much when planted. So this seems like a good thing, even if it is frankenrice.

Yes, rice farmers won't have to pay Monsanto & co. every year. This could make quite an impact in poor countries.
