I remember Sega's "live" service cart for the Genesis. A cart with a modem that allowed one to dial into a BBS style system to download games and do other stuff. Pretty innovative for consoles of the day.

Nintendo had something similar in Japan that was actually popular.

I think the Famicom and Super Famicom had a way in Japan for you to even check your bank account balances.
