Some dogs are "runners" and there is nothing you can do about it. Some dogs are just stupid, and again there is nothing you can do about it. I talked at length with a guy that has been a our local dog pound for 20 years, and he says that realistically only about 25% of the dogs he brings in are worth saving... the rest are mental cases.

I have had a number of 'runners' in my life. We jokingly refer to them as "explorers" instead.

There was a small dog who escaped from his yard on the 4th of July one year in our mountain neighborhood. Tried to catch it but it was too scared. Had several neighbors hunting for the dog. I don't know if it was ever found. Dangerous place for a dog to get loose in the forest. I worry about dogs getting loose every 4th now.

My tank of a doggo runs to the nearest trash can for a free-range buffet. I now have padlocks on the gates, and it works.
