In my jurisdiction, and I suspect yours as well, the county dictated that business display the mask signs on their door in an act of forced speech. Very few care to follow up with you, they just don't want to get shuttered by the health department. If they care enough, I confirm with the person asking me that it is their personal desire that I wear the mask. If they say yes, I wear it, buy my stuff, and throw it away on the way out. Almost never does anyone care. I'm not going to start a scene in my neighborhood hardware store - I need them. Another good strategy is to ignore them and keep walking, only the rare autist escalate that. You can go 99% barefaced about your life if you don't want controversy with your local shops. I'm not dying the 1% mask time hill even though I object to it. Now, the Sacrament - yeah, I'm ready to die on that hill at the moment. We'll see what happens when I have to decide on future paychecks. That's a tough choice for anybody. However, I can live off of savings while the world burns because once it gets rolling I don't really think that retirement accounts are going to have much utility. Plus I'll need the capital to build my own business to undercut my former employer or buy a truck for my Emergency Authorized corpse disposal business and pozole kitchen.
