There’s a user who has quail on here I do to. I’m on year two and here’s why I’m getting rid of them;

Pros;

  1. Quail eggs have twice the nutrition of chicken eggs

  2. They cure asthma

  3. You can’t get salmonella

  4. Quail are easy to take care of

Cons

  1. Quail eggs are tiny and a bitch to peel when you cook.

  2. The eggs aren’t practical. It takes a lot for an omelette and the shells break into your egg

  3. The birds are too small for a proper meal

  4. They fly.

  5. My hatch success rate is 0% yea it’s probably something I did wrong but fuck man that’s discouraging

At the end of the day quail are want to be chickens and they fail in all the aspects.

When I was a kid I went to a boarding school. Within the boarding school school there was a large Menagerie. For a year I had to care for the Menagerie and its inhabitants.

There were quails.

Being so young and stupid I just thought they were undeveloped chickens. So, thinking I was helping them I would toss them into the air to teach them how to fly. But no, they always colided with the barriers.

Years later I discovered how good they taste!

Never had quail but have had chickens. I have always wanted quail but not for eggs bur for meat. I wish they could incubate there own eggs like chickens.

Yes that’s the main reason I’m going to dispatch them. The incubation failure is too high for these birds

I dont want to deal with incubating. I grew up breeding all sort of animals. However incubating eggs is a no go. To much extra work. I almost bought a pair of Gambles quail which I can only otherwise get while quail hunting. However even though the mom will raise the chicks. They are seasonal. So a clutch every spring. I wanted them more for pets to be honest.

Nope, you are doing it wrong. I have had hatch rates over 75%. Higher with button quail. Study incubation and do it better.

Add in they only take 8 weeks from hatch to laying versus 16 for chickens and quail as meat used to be really popular.

Can I ask why you went with Quail and not Chickens? I have a few friends with chicken coops at this point and I have been considering it. As A kid my mom once got some quail we fattened up and slaughtered before thanksgiving so I understand the difficulties you talk about. It seems like Chickens are about the same work, maybe a little more bird shit to deal with... but chickens don't have the problems you are seeing with quail. The eggs are normal sized, a single chicken could feed the family for a meal, etc.

My coworker gave me some quail before he quit. And I have a chicken coop so I figured why not give this a try.

Now that I tried it and I have a chicken coop it makes no sense to not have chickens. Plus chickens eat scraps so that’s another pro for having chickens.
