I drug my feet preparing a better water container so that they wouldn't be able to get wet. This morning one of the white quail was laying over, cold and wet. I can only assume he jumped into the water and lost body heat until he died. I caught him at his last, tried to warm him up but it was too late.

This is what I made to try to prevent it. I am not sure they are pecking at it hard enough to get the water to come out even though it takes very little agitation to get it to drip water out.

Tomorrow I'll be putting some hardware cloth over a feeder to keep them from scratching it out. If I don't see any success with this water dispenser, I'll do the same with the water.

I found a really great design for a four stack quail hutch and plan to build that as these guys get bigger.

So far their noises are very cute and they're fun to watch. They're not at all intimidated by anything, dogs or humans.

Those poultry nipples will be fine. Give them a few hours with it, then poke each drinker to get a little water on it. Trust me, they'll sniff out the water. When the jug gets within a couple inches of the nipples, fill it back up. They'll really fight them to get water out when the pressure is low.

They don't look as old in this pic as they did in your first pic we talked about, but I'm very surprised one at this size died solely from getting wet while indoors. Odds are it was a little wimpy. My opinion, fwiw.

I don't know if you saw the photo of him that I posted in the other comment, but I thought he looked a little "under the weather" because of how fluffed up he was and how soft his eyes looked. I wasn't sure though, because I haven't had quail, but I think perhaps the chicken and quail have very similar tendencies.

They are similar to chickens.

After about the 10 day mark, they're usually survivors unless it's just a weak bird. I'm not surprised it was a white one.

Also, I'll get you a picture of a no-waste feeder. You have to contain the whole head. When they take a bite, they like to shake their heads around and toss feed. There are a lot of ok ones on youtube, but I think I have it mastered at this point. Zero feed makes it to the ground.

I did this quickly, but it's raining so I didn't empty the bottom yet. No way to tell how much waste.
