I drug my feet preparing a better water container so that they wouldn't be able to get wet. This morning one of the white quail was laying over, cold and wet. I can only assume he jumped into the water and lost body heat until he died. I caught him at his last, tried to warm him up but it was too late.

This is what I made to try to prevent it. I am not sure they are pecking at it hard enough to get the water to come out even though it takes very little agitation to get it to drip water out.

Tomorrow I'll be putting some hardware cloth over a feeder to keep them from scratching it out. If I don't see any success with this water dispenser, I'll do the same with the water.

I found a really great design for a four stack quail hutch and plan to build that as these guys get bigger.

So far their noises are very cute and they're fun to watch. They're not at all intimidated by anything, dogs or humans.

I did this quickly, but it's raining so I didn't empty the bottom yet. No way to tell how much waste.

That's better than nothing as a temporary fix. When they get bigger especially, they'll toss feed out of that like crazy.

They look good and fully feathered.

Thank you. I'm sorry I was a lazy faggot and killed one. I feel like I did a disservice to you and the poor chicken. Theres a rule with homesteading, never get more than one new critter until you've mastered it. I was so tied up worrying about this stupid rabbit my daughter got instead of getting the water fixed for the quail chicks. It was really irresponsible of me.

The rabbit she bought is a Satin Angora and he's in really bad shape, his claws are 1 1/4" long, hes got significant matted fur, I've spent a lot of time trying to "fix" him.

You meant poor "quail" not "chicken" right? It's not your fault. When you're hatching out tons of quail later on, you're going to lose a fair amount especially the first week. If they all drown or froze to death, that'd be on you. Just keep their food and water topped off. They'll be fine. The stricter your breeding program is, the stronger your chicks will be.

I'm sure the rabbit will be fine, too.
