Maybe they were eating your mom's flowers or something? I can't imagine how they were tearing up the yard other than what I mentioned about water holes? A single chicken years up more grass than when I have 15 ducks running around.
I settled on these breeds for meat and eggs. I've raised pekins for meat, but they're not much fun. I'd rather hatch my own than pay $2 for ducklings, but there aren't any sex linked breeds that could match the eggs and meat of these 2.
Are you going to eat them? Do you just want eggs? Do you just find them entertaining out in the yard? Do you have neighbors? I'll recommend some breeds based on that.

Yes, and no close neighbors.
yes
Lol!
If you don't mind incubating eggs, you could get anything. Khaki campbells lay the most eggs, more than chickens. They're not good for meat due to size. My cayuga's aren't the fastest growers compared to pekins, but they are meaty. Really, you could pick any breed you think looks cool and incubate. Runners are funny, but skittish.
If you just want them to mother their own eggs, check out swedish blue or buffs. Or, muscovies. They're the weirdo south american cousins of the ducks we're used to. Big meaty bastards, but they look weird and don't make noise. Good moms, ok eggs, and a ton of breast meat.
Part of the whole experience is watching them fart around in the yard acting retarded.
The appeal with ducks is their cuteness and quacks. The fond childhood memories help too!
Ok. I'll look around here and see what I see. Truly I'd adore more like what I had as a kid. I even watched the two I had hatch! But I don't know what they're called.
Thanks for your input!
