Minor point I noticed in this thread. Mr. Riley writes:

This is one of those truisms that is untrue. Once you realize this, you should never mechanically repeat it. There is no requirement that a listener to a lie believe the lie before it becomes a lie. It is a lie the moment it leaves the lips of the speaker.
