I think you're mistaking the small fraction of highly brainwashed, painfully vocal Internet liberals with the majority of ordinary people. The pandemic played upon a great deal of fears and exploited much trust in certain institutuons that has now almost completely disintegrated for a large proportion of humanity, be them Americans, British or French.
