I really want to see a "NO dual citizenships for any government official. Any country, no exceptions."
This should scare the hell out of anyone with a room temperature or higher IQ.
Once that door is open they can change anything in the document. We don't need a Constitutional Convention to eliminate cabinet level agencies. Just an executive with balls.
This whole thing is subterfuge to get rid of the bill of rights. I guarantee it.
"We had to give in on the second amendment in order to reduce the size of government". I can hear it now. This will truly be the end of America.
This is the correct answer. Hillary Clinton was/is also pushing a Constitutional Convention. Once convened, they will strip away 2A for sure, and create amendments that are 25,000 pages long to structure a modern panopticon.
We don't need a Constitutional Convention to eliminate cabinet level agencies. Just an executive with balls.
What stops the next president from bringing those agencies back?
The people not being dumb fucks and not voting for democrats or RINO's? Nothing I guess but would they?
The people not being dumb fucks
That would be helpful for a constitutional convention, too.
Nothing I guess but would they?
If "they" are the people, maybe. If "they" refers to the hypothetical next president, that is a potential danger. I'm aware that a constitutional convention has risks, but so does relying on a coming great man, executive orders, or anything else.
What stops the plethora of bad actors from getting control of the Convention of the States movement, and using it to gut the Constitution, tear up the Bill of Rights, and create another commie/socialist utopia like Venezuela?
Most realistically, it would be conventions rarely actually occuring, but the threat of a convention makes the federal government act. Like I put in the post, a Soros-backed convention effort already exists. That means it's better that rival efforts exist to sabotage his efforts and if they were really lucky, actually make positive changes.
The argument that something could go wrong is understandable, but it implicitly favors inaction and giving tactics to the left.
A last minute addition they will insert
"Israel shall of course be able to supercede anything in our constitution"
I don't trust them at all.
The political population balance is not in our favor now and any changes are likely to end up going the wrong way.
Better hang on to the few things we have left.
How do we hang on to anything if we're already afraid to try anything?
The Constitution does not need to be re-written. It needs to be followed.
It would be great if it was followed, but we can't act like it will never need updates. For instance, I wouldn't mind English declared the national language, the end of birthright citizenship to children with no American parents, or a fixed number of Supreme Court justices. Are there risks to a convention? Yes, but that should inspire engagement rather avoidance
This is amazingly dangerous, and could instead result in a horrible expansion of Federal powers, but we're stuck right now.
I'm a bit pessimistic. The government is currently ignoring much of the Constitution and making the Constitution stronger won't solve that problem and may make it worse.
Typically, a convention scares the federal government when it's ignoring state and local needs. With America first figures in state and local governments, there's a window for positive change. Of course, we'll have to guard against schemers who also want a convention, like Soros.
I get mailers from COS movement and I recently received one with a smiling picture of Ben Shapiro and Sean Hannity listed as two of their supporters. Really tells me this “movement” probably deserves to be flushed.
It's important to remember there are people with all sorts of ideologies vying for a convention. Hopefully, the America First people can overcome Soros and right-wing grifters.
True. On their website they list their supporters and provide a quote from each. There’s a lot of respectable names on the list.
Partial quote of Article V: "The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress"
It takes 2/3 of whichever entry point to get amendments on the table, but still takes 3/4 to ratify them.
Also, "just 15 states away" is a weird way to put it. 2/3 of 50 is about 34, so 15 states away implies that you have only 19 right now. That means you'd have to nearly double your count to reach the threshold, so it isn't even close really. (edited to fix common corism on 2/3 of 50)
Also, "just 15 states away" is a weird way to put it. 2/3 of 50 is about 35, so 15 states away implies that you have only 20 right now. That means you'd have to nearly double your count to reach the threshold, so it isn't even close really.
The article is written by a center-leftist for center-left readers. It's fearmongering that Trump and corporations are going to rewrite the entire Constitution.
As the article notes, most conventions have failed, but they scare DC into taking their desires seriously. I'm hopeful that will be the case.
