X.com is what Paypal used to be called.
In 2017 Musk purchased the domain X.com from PayPal for an undisclosed amount, explaining it has sentimental value.
A quick search makes it look like their dealings were financial. Didn't really see any deeper ties to Pierre, (not that there aren't any).

It's all so interconnected, convoluted and confusing, it makes my head spin.
