We didn't like the Cuban Missile Crisis - but we put Russia into the same position with Ukraine. Also, we regenned on JFK's promise when he removed the missiles from Turkey in return for Russia removing the missiles from Cuba.
Russia is just applying our own Monroe Doctrine to their borders as we do to Central America and the Caribbean.
