Why was the traitor there? Did he work for a three letter agency?
I'm going to guess by his name that he was fighting for his ancestors' lands. He's heard of his people being in that area for generations and how they were ground zero during WW2 and subsequently running from commies or survivors of the trick to send natives to Siberia to work or die. This is his chance to be a part of fighting for freedom from Russians. If he had a parent displaced by WW2 then he had direct stories of the horrors inflicted on the people by the commies.
Edit: Yes, he should not have gone.
