Whether we should defend ourselves, or fight against others who attack us is one question. We see more clearly when we stand in defense of someone else. Even when we are making a mistake, the mistake is far less when it is done for the love of someone else. There is always a great risk in defending ourselves directly, that we will be acting purely out of the love of our own life. And that is pride.
