Richard Allen is a black patriot who was the pastor of a very large white church. He and founder Benjamin Rush worked together to treat yellow fever in boston during the yellow fever epidemic. Absolom Jones, first black bishop in the episcopal church, also helped taking care of the sick. In 1787 Frederick Douglas examined the claims about the Constitution condoning slavery. He came to the conclusion that the Constitution is an anti-slavery document and means of government. The 3/5ths clause was a political counter to the southern states attempting to strengthen slavery laws by using the very slaves as "citizens" in order to increase their political power. Northern representatives, like James Wilson and Eldridge Gerry, countered these arguments by saying they would count their horses and cattle since the southern state considered slaves as "property".

African Americans are left out of history because they were overwhelmingly Christians. Wentworth Cheswell, a black American elected to office in 1775 in New Hampshire, is the black patriot who rode the opposite way that Paul Revere did. In 1808 Congress abolished the slave trade. Absolom Jones delivered a sermon to highlight the event. By 1820 the democratic party began to reverse this abolition and allowed slavery to happen again. In 1850 the fugitive slave law allowed free blacks to be carried off into slavery. The democratic party was responsible. In 1854 the kansas nebraska act allowed slavery where it was previously forbidden. In May of 1854 the republican party was formed.

Marquis de Lafayette is pictured with a black man, James Armistead. Armistead was a double spy who helped Lafayette to defeat the British. In the battle of Bunker Hill Peter Salem, a black patriot, was the hero. He received many awards and recognitions. Lemuel Haynes, a black pastor and evangelist, preached a sermon every year on Washington's birthday. William Nell was the first African American appointed to a federal post. He wrote several books to include "The Colored Patriots of the American Revolution". Black pastors had a huge impact in our founding and governing. Harry Hoosier was one of them during the first Great Awakening.
