It's not just power generation, but transmission and conversion (both at the substation and neighborhood level). Most houses and apartment sections would need service upgrades. From my experience most older houses have non-code compliant changes which would cost thousands to bring up to code before those service upgrades could be done legally. We should be giving out seed funds for US manufacturing of these required components as well as scholarships for relevant fields such as electrical engineering (for US students). The fact that we're doing nothing to enable the transition in a decade or two shows that no one is really serious about this stuff. As far as I can tell, Toyota is the only car manufacturer that seems to be stating gasoline engines can't go away until larger problems are solved. I think they'll just start taxing the fuck out of gasoline to force the free market's hand (like $20-30/gallon gas). Once gasoline cars become a non-option, they'll start talking about how damaging electric cars are to the environment and how we need to ban them. I still remember when they forced everyone to transition from paper grocery bags to plastic. Paper bags can easily be sustainably made from scraps of fast growth trees and degrade quickly when disposed of. The plastic bags are an environmental nightmare that we just incinerate at this point.
