Back in WWII they used to call them "Victory Gardens". Grow your own food so the troops can be fed by the "bigger farms/ranches/etc". People lost their way when they decided that growing grass because "pretty" was more important than growing food.
[edit] Also. A lot of young people have no idea where their food comes from and have no concept on how to grow food or bring up animals. When I was young my family did grow some food but my parents did not place a lot of importance in it. However, they would help me if I wanted to do something. One of the oddest things I did was grow carrots indoors in a hanging flower pot. It worked out just fine since they were near a good south-facing window. Growing food is not hard.
