80% of the opium coming out of Afghanistan goes out through Iran, through Turkey, to Europe. Watch the price of heroin in Europe. If it spikes suddenly due to a shortage of product, then you'll know if they are telling the truth.

Afghanistan is a land-locked country. Ask yourself this: If the taliban shut down opium production, what other marketable product could they export that any of their neighbors would be willing to buy, that they cannot produce for themselves, in order to finance their imports, which by the way, is basically everything? Dancing boys?

I'm pretty cynical, and even I don't think money trumps ideology. Only an insular mindset would believe otherwise. Call it myopia.
But maybe I'm mistaken and not sufficiently cynical.
I'm gonna bet that you've never really been hungry, have you? I don't mean, "missed a couple meals" hungry. I mean you are starving and still have no idea where your next meal is going to come from and there's a good chance you are going to starve to death hungry.
I lived in AFG for over a decade. Islam is like a pair of shoes they put on and take off for convenience. It's an "ideology" only in so much as it suits them and supports and justifies doing basically whatever the fuck they want. And they know that money is money. There is even an old saying amongst the Afghans. "You can't buy and Afghan. But you can rent them."

You have clearly never had to live with an addict. Even as a kid I noticed that there may not always be enough money for food, but somehow there is always enough money for drugs.
