Governor Kate Brown Visits Semiconductor Manufacturers as Part of Future Ready Oregon Tour The Governor visited Lam Research and Analog Devices in Washington County

(Portland, OR) — Today, Governor Kate Brown visited Lam Research in Tualatin and Analog Devices in Beaverton as part of her Future Ready Oregon tour, in which she is exploring opportunities for state partnership around job creation and workforce development statewide.

At Lam Research, the Governor was joined by Timothy Cooper, Managing Director of North America Manufacturing, Michael Leonard, Senior Director of Manufacturing, Kim Harr, Senior Director of Engineering, and Karin Sharp, Director of Manufacturing. The Governor toured Lam’s manufacturing and new product introduction pilot operations. Lam employs over 4,000 in Oregon, including highly skilled direct labor employees involved in the assembly, integration, and testing of semiconductor process equipment, which is used to produce nearly all semiconductor chips available in the world today.

“I am committed to expanding semiconductor manufacturing in Oregon,” said Governor Brown. "I was pleased to learn about Lam’s new apprenticeship program and their partnership with Portland Community College to train employees seeking to advance into test technician roles. It is collaborations like this that I hope will continue to create opportunities for working families with the implementation of Future Ready Oregon.”

While at Analog Devices, the Governor was joined by Fred Bailey, Vice President of Fab Operations, Gregory Bryant, Executive Vice President & President of Business Units, Daniel Burlingame, Beaverton Site General Manager, and Karen Bowles, Operations Director. The Governor toured Analog’s factory, including its engineering labs, fab support, and wafer fab. The company designs and manufactures high-performance analog, mixed-signal, and digital signal processing integrated circuits used in virtually all types of electronic equipment. Analog employs 840 people at its Beaverton facility.

“The semiconductor industry presents tremendous economic potential for our state, and now is the time to seize the opportunity,” said Governor Brown. “I want to thank Analog Devices for their continued investments in high level technical jobs in Oregon. With Future Ready Oregon, we are not just building job skills, but creating career ladders, so that Oregonians from all backgrounds have the opportunity to secure good-paying jobs in the tech and manufacturing sectors.”

On February 10, 2022, Governor Brown, Senator Ron Wyden, Senator Jeff Merkley, and Representative Suzanne Bonamici announced the formation of the Oregon Semiconductor Competitiveness Taskforce. The purpose of the task force is to analyze how the semiconductor industry in Oregon can continue to thrive and grow, and help produce prosperity and opportunity for a broad cross-section of Oregonians. The group includes a range of prominent community leaders and state and local elected officials and is co-chaired by Governor Brown, Senator Wyden, and Maria Pope, President and CEO of Portland General Electric. The taskforce is expected to hold its first virtual meeting this month.
