They will just pretend it never happened. Their Orwellian powers are all but complete, they display blinding rage that is a mile wide and an inch deep, the target of their rage can switch in an instant, the old target so totally forgotten that it is not even relevant. They will happily question yesterdays controversy, but never todays, and will continue to vilify those who dared to question yesterdays controversy yesterday.

How many fingers am I holding up, Winston?'

'I don't know. I don't know. You will kill me if you do that again. Four, five, six -- in all honesty I don't know.'

'Better,' said O'Brien.

It's not about saying the right words at the right time, it's about thought control. It's about training yourself to not think at all, to blindly accept whatever explanation they put forward today. Even if it's entirely contradictory to yesterday's explanation. Even better if todays explanation is totally contradictory to yesterdays, that just serves to demoralise people even further.

i completely agree. i don't know the exact concept or word to describe it, but that's very much what is happening. the supposed "authority" lays out explanations that seem to be contradictory at different times so in the future regardless of outcome they have some soundbite or statement they can refer back to.

the most blatant is Fraudci's mask, no mask, double mask statements. they talk out both sides of their mouth, simultaneously in some cases. it causes confusion, demoralization (as you pointed out) and complete lack of trust. things a healthy society would not create.
