In Oregon, investor-owned utilities such as NW Natural agree to oversight of rates by the state in exchange for exclusivity in supplying customers in geographic areas.
NW Natural supplies natural gas to customers in most of northwest Oregon, including Salem, Eugene and Portland, most of the Oregon Coast and part of southwest Washington including Vancouver.
Under its proposal, the average residential bill would increase to $69.76 per month from $62.96 per month, a 10.8% increase.
“This request is frankly obscene,” Alan Journet of Southern Oregon Climate Action Now said.
The state will hold an evidentiary hearing Aug. 2 and oral arguments Aug. 25. The commission will make its decision in October and any rate increase would go into effect Nov. 1.
