Electronic mail was created over many years through an evolution of messaging systems as the internet was being developed by many people working together through various universities, research companies, military groups, etc. starting long before Shiva came along. If he invented it, he would have a patent on it. This patent was issued to Shiva's company General Interactive, LLC, which developed the product EchoMail. He holds a patent on *an* electronic mailing system, and only applied for the patent many years later. The system he designed lacked many of the necessary security features used in today's email systems. The word 'email' is not able to be patented or even copyrighted. Trademark only, if applied for, which it wasn't, because the word was already in use by others working on similar systems at the time. I don't trust this guy for the simple reason that he's trying to sell this idea that he invented it, like Al Gore said he invented the internet.
