Trump tweeted the following on Dec 3, 2018 about his former attorney Michael Cohen, who was cooperating with the Mueller investigation: *"........and get his wife and father-in-law (who has the money) off Scott Free. He lied for this outcome and should, in my opinion, get a full and complete sentence. "* We know that Trump deliberately makes these types of errors in order to give us clues. In this instance, Trump incorrectly uses "Scott Free" instead of the correct phrase "Scot Free". The term Scot Free is often confused with "Scott" as in Dred Scott whose landmark court decision led to the civil war. So one might conclude that Trump is signalling that freedom is around the corner -- in other words "slave no more". But this interpretation is likely not correct. Some say the term "Scot-Free" originated from the phrase "Scotch Free", meaning uninjured or unmarked. Other reports say it is derived from the middle English term 'bescot', which means a customary tax paid to a lord. In this instance, the term literally means 'free from tax'. So knowing that Trump is using this term in a way that has double meaning, what does it represent? He definitely thinks Cohen has sold out and lied about Trump to escape personal culpability for his own crimes. What else does it mean? Well, It is important to note that Cohen's wife is Ukrainian and his father-in-law has wealth in Ukraine as well as US based businesses, and has his own sketchy history.
