Things we can do besides just stocking up on dry goods: Buy chicks now if you have enough space. You can eat, sale or trade the roosters in six months and just keep one good rooster. If you plant grass appropriate for your area the hens keep the grass short and eat lots of bugs. The eggs are much better than factory eggs. Two hens per person in household is plenty. Chickens love picking through your food waste.
Network with neighbors to share fruit if you have fruit trees.
Plant herbs like oregano, garlic, chili peppers, and basil.
Use other spaces for quick growing crops like corn, squash and such while encouraging friends to do the same.
For those who have land goats are great.
