The modern information environment, and how we interact with it, allows perceptions to be shaped in seconds with a retweet, a share, a like, or a download.
What autocratic rulers clearly understand is the power of social connection and how the internet and information environment facilitate idea mobilization and narrative affinity across populations.
To this day, Russia’s false narratives about Jade Helm persist and show how conspiracy theories take root, grow, and are difficult to counter once they enter public discourse.
I would guess that Cyber Command (and Space Force) is deeply involved in the development of TruthSocial and the technology it runs on, and how these are being designed to eliminate the current methods of information warfare. That would necessarily include a substitute for Google, which is designed to facilitate propaganda injection while blocking a fuller range of information sources. Devin Nunes (future CEO of Trump Media & Technology Group) recently stated:
"This is a quality, user-friendly product," Nunes explained, saying that there will not be any algorithms used to prioritize certain posts to certain users. "It will be in chronological order, and the feed will be so that you don't miss what your distant relative posted about their kid's soccer game over the weekend – that's what happens now on your platforms, you're just served so much garbage all the time."
The chronological order aspect would be instrumental in developing a better search engine than Google offers, since Google makes it very hard to look back on news items in an ordered fashion that allows you to research subjects based on key words and time frames. Non-priortization of posts will eliminate the ability of certain information sources to dominate the search results, burying or eliminating other sources in the process.
We'll have to see how it develops, but it sounds like it will be the start of a new stage in internet technology.
