To accept the truth would utterly shift their mindset for the rest of their days. Sea level change. As it is, humans resist change...to the max. It normally requires one's back to the wall. Unless the payoff is more attractive then what one currently has. But for the higher principles...that is unfortunately the exception to the rule, to sacrifice.
